Movable Type Templates
I'm a very new blogger, it's normally quite unusual for a computer nerd to flatter this hot baby so late :-). Now I have been onboard for two weeks, how do I think about this blog program - Movable Type 3.01D? In simple words, very powerful but very difficult to customize.
Let's focus on the templates in this post, before I started, I thought the layout could be customized easily in the control panel, for example, add link section, define logo, etc., unfortunately I only found some templates which are definitely difficult for normal computer users to manipulate. Then I reckoned there must be lots of ready-to-use templates on the Internet and started searching with Google, but found nothing really useful or meet my requirement, I have to admit that I didn't extensively look for it, just spent about 20 minutes every time when I was bored.
As a result, my blog was still using the default templates after 10 days, even didn't have a link to the homepage. I can't bear it any more and decided to look into the manual, IMO, Movable Type documentation is very poor, it's not very helpful if you have little experience before, but the good thing is MT has an active support forum, by reading the manual and some old posts, with almost one day, I eventually managed to customize the layout as exactly what I want, which looks the same on IE and Mozilla, I thought it should be 5-minute work.
I'm quite satisfied with the result, but not the procedure. Movable Type really needs a good and useful documentation, some easy to follow tutorials even for new computer users, and the most important, add functionality which make the customization straightforward, this should be very easy from technical point of view. I'm a Java programmer and a part-time C++ programmer, reading documentation is my daily task, if 20% of them are like MT, my work would be a nightmare.
So if you want to customize your blog layout, what should you do? My suggestions: search MT support forum first, you may find ready-to-use scripts and insert into your templates. If you are not lucky enough, then you have to read the poor MT manual and try again and again, till everything works fine.

Google Search
Added Google search function to this website, it enables you to search this website easily and fast, such as DVD FAQ and articles.
Google's search technology is still very amazing to me even I have been using it for 3.5 years. I don't understand how they can make it so fast, how it organizes the huge information, it almost cached the whole Internet.
When you look for some information with Google, don't ignore the newsgroup search if you can't find it with normal search, it's very useful especially when you have technical questions.

How to Store DVDs?
Most people think of DVDs as little more than high-capacity CDs, but though the two are very similar, DVDs have vulnerabilities that require particular care in their handling, storage, and cleaning. But with a bit of knowledge and effort, nearly all damage to DVDs can be prevented.
Does DVD rot really exist? How should you keep you DVDs? Check out the great article : DVD Rot, or Not?.

Free DVD Recording Tool For Linux?
DVD-Software.info only has Windows DVD software so far. As a Java programmer, I only use Linux for work, it's quite frustrating to use Linux for entertainment at home, either play popular games or copy DVD.
There is a discussion on slashdot.org about DVD tools for Linux, check it out if you are a Linux user.
"cdrecord-ProDVD is OK for burning DVDs but (i) it grumbles pointlessly about device names and (ii) it has a weird binary-only license that expires every six months or so. There are some Free forks off cdrtools - dvd+rw/+r/-r ,dvdrtools and this patch - do any of them make a good replacement?"

Gmail Cracks Down on Third-Party Notifiers
From slashdot.org
Recently, Google's gmail service has attempted to change login protocols to block third-party gmail notifiers that alert you to new email. Google has now taken it one step further and created a word-identification script filter as part of the login process. Personally, I find Google's gmail notifier annoying since it sits in my taskbar and doesn't have popup notification, unlike many other worthy Firefox or Mozilla plugins that feature gmail notification. Shouldn't I be free to use whatever third party software to check my email? Will we be seeing controls on browsers that can view gmail next?"
I wanted to write a Gmail notifier tool which would support multi-account and caught "mailto:" click on web pages, but I want to wait for a while to see if Google will release a Gmail API, now Google told us it didn't like any third party tools.
Recently Google also gave out lots of Gmail invites, I received more than 20 in the past week, is it a sign Google will open Gmail to the public soon?

DVD XCopy Maker Shuts Doors
This past Monday, 321 Studios shut its doors. Maker of the once popular DVD copying applications, DVD X Copy and DVD Copy Plus, the St. Charles, Missouri company has brought an end to nearly two years of legal battles with the leading Hollywood Studios, which felt the software was in violation of federal law. In February, the company was barred from selling its DVD copying engine, and it could no longer afford to carry on.
321's legal battles began in early 2002, when CEO Robert Moore read a news article wherein a spokesperson for the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA)—the organization that represents film, home video, and television companies—accused the company of selling piracy software in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and threatened legal action.
The company soon filed a declaratory relief action, a way of preempting a lawsuit, asking a court to rule that DVD Copy Plus is not in violation of the DMCA. The action named nine different movie studios as defendants: Columbia Pictures Industry, Disney Enterprises, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Pixar, The Saul Zaentz Company, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Time Warner Entertainment, TriStar Pictures, and Universal City Studios. In December of that year, seven of those nine filed a counter suit, seeking not only to re-move the tools from the market but also to recover damages from 321 Studios.
When the ruling was announced this February, Judge Susan Illston of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California ordered 321 Studios to stop selling DVD X Copy, deciding the application was indeed illegal under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which prevents the sale of software designed to break the copy-protection schemes used by digital media.
321 had claimed that the DMCA allows individuals to make copies of DVDs for their own personal use, but, according to Evan R. Cox, an intellectual property attorney and a partner in the San Francisco office of the international law firm Covington & Burling, this is not the case. "This was a pretty unsurprising result," Cox told PC Magazine in February. "The judge really couldn't come out any other way without standing the statute on its head and, basically, rendering it meaningless."
The company did file an appeal, but, unable to sell anything but severely crippled versions of DVD X Copy, it didn't have the money to continue fighting. 321 has posted a notice to its Web site, saying that it has ceased to sell, support, or promote its products, but that existing customers could continue to use the technical support "knowledge base" and FAQs on the site until August 1, 2005.

Wireless LAN go-go boots
We’ll spare you the “these boots were made for walking” line, but the Seven Mile Boots are designed to stroll around in and out of open wireless networks, and they are kind of Sinatra-style hot (that’s Nancy not Frank). The boots have a wireless network, a microprocessor, sensors, amps and a speaker, and enable the user to listen to chat rooms with audio by automatically logging-in with the name “sevenmileboots”. The boots are going to be on exhibit at the Austrian Ars Electronica Festival next week.

These boots have to be for super nerds :-)

DVD -R9 v. +R9
Just when we thought the dust settled on the last format war between CD-R's we see a new one brewing with DVD recordable discs. DVD -R9/+R9 will apparently be the next technological slugfest where there are no rewards for second place. With all of these new recording format options made available to the public, how can any consumer intelligently know which one to buy into?"
An interesting comment by doc_modulo
The DVD+ format is better because it supports absolute accurate positioning of the sector to be written. DVD- isn't accurate to a single sector.
That means a DVD+RW can be written to without gaps, just like you can write to a floppy or HD with accuracy in the written sector/without gaps.
And this in turn means that only DVD+RW supports Mount Rainier (in the future). Mount Rainier is hardware assisted packet writing:
- The most important thing is that you can use your DVD+MRW (Mount Rainier Rewritable) as a floppy disk/Hard drive. You drag and drop, delete, write something else etc. Just like a storage device is supposed to be used, none of this "burning" crap. MR has extra fault tolerance too.
- Standard OS drivers for all MR drives, they all behave the same.
- Formatting in the background by the firmware, the RW can be written to after about 1 minute, you don't have to wait for the whole DVD to finish formatting to start using it.
Only problem is, there are no fully compliant Mount Rainier DVD+MRW drives yet :(
The manufacturers are now scampering to get to 16x speed first. After the makers all achieve 16x then we'll get get other differentiating features in the drives, like MR.
The only advantage you get with +RW at the moment is that OTHER packet writing methods (like Nero InCD) also benefit from the exact laser positioning. You don't get Some of the other MRW stuff like background formatting.
I'm waiting with buying a DVD drive until there's an +MRW. You can also recognize compliant drives with the Philips "Easy Write" logo.
P.S. the DVD-R and -RW camp are the ones that do whatever the movie industry wants. The computer manufacturers split from that group because they wanted better features like absolute write-positioning and came up with +RW.

Halo tournaments - New use for movie theaters
If Internet piracy ends ruining the film industry at least they’ll be able to put all those empty movie theaters to good use: a theater in Logan, Utah set up video projectors in four theaters, hooked each one up to an Xbox and is now holding a weekly giant-screen Halo tournament every Friday night at midnight. They’re even charging teams $60 to play and spectators three bucks a pop just to watch.

Plextor’s DivX-friendly ConvertX PX-M402U digital video encoder
Plextor’s new ConvertX PX-M402U real-time digital video converter makes all the right moves, encoding video from any analog source not only into MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, but also into everybody’s new favorite video format, DivX MPEG-4 (hello, Internet piracy!).

We won’t even pretend that most people are going to be using this thing to import video from a camcorder (we’ve all gone DV, right?), so fortunately the ConvertX PX-M402U also works perfectly well with TVs, DVD players, (and perhaps most importantly if you want to digitize all those old taped episodes of 120 Minutes you have lying around) VCRs.

DivX video, now playing on a TV near you
As you probably know by now, we released the latest DivX(r) codec to a throng of screaming fans on July 15th. But instead of the usual run down of the codec's new features and advantages over competing technologies — of which there are many — I'd like to talk to you about something else today … the wanton destruction of the world's precious old growth forests. Just kidding, I'd like to talk to you about the DivX(r) Certified Program for consumer electronics.
If you've been shopping for a new DVD player recently, you probably noticed that all the best ones ;) have a snazzy logo on them proclaiming "DivX Certified." What does that logo mean, you ask? It means that in addition to playing disks in the retail standard MPEG-2/DVD format, that DivX Certified DVD players will also play burned video CDs in the Internet standard DivX format, letting you take your entire library of PC video content and enjoy it on your home theater system in big-screen, wall-rattling six speaker splendor. With DivX Certified High Definition DVD players poised to hit the market soon, you'll even be able to enjoy DivX video that takes advantage of the ultra-high resolution of an HDTV. And, because every DivX Certified device is rigorously tested and confidently guaranteed by the best nerds in the digital video industry (AKA the DivXNetworks engineers), you can rest assured that the DivX Certified device you purchase will offer industry leading video quality and performance. Any DVD player or other consumer electronics device bearing one of the DivX Certified logos — Handheld, Portable, Home Theater or High Definition — is guaranteed to handle DivX video content optimized for that category of devices perfectly.
Check out the full line of DivX Certified DVD players.

DVD player profits down to $1
The revolution in consumer electronics that was supposed to make everyone rich apparently isn't.
This news.com story tells how Chinese DVD player manufacturers are only making $1 margins per player! The story says that 'Commoditization is hitting China's DVD player manufacturers hard, according to researcher iSuppli, Between January and May, the average selling price of a DVD player exported out of the Guangdong province came to $40.80, leaving just about $1 in profit margins for the manufacturers.' You wonder if other business, like low-end PCs hardware, are in similar trouble.
